Manage your work overload to help regain a feeling of control

Even the most organized of individuals will likely become overloaded with work from time to time; this definitely plays a major part in turning a good day bad. When a person’s workload gets too heavy, they may start to feel overwhelmed. They lose focus and their thoughts scatter as things spiral out of control, until eventually they just shut down altogether.

If you’ve ever felt that there’s just too much to do, and too little time to do it, you are not alone. Luckily, there are practices you can put in place to organize your days more effectively and manage work overload.

First, you should be setting boundaries to get things under control. You are overwhelmed because your time wasn’t effectively organized. Get back on track by deciding what kind of hours you will work and how many tasks you can handle per day, and then stick to this plan. It is also crucial that you communicate these boundaries to your colleagues, to ensure that people aren’t demanding things that you simply do not have time for.

Furthermore, as you work through your daily responsibilities, avoid multitasking. Doing multiple things at once may seem more productive, but it actually makes it harder for you to focus, and you will likely take longer to accomplish things as your brain tries to switch back and forth between different thoughts and ideas. Do one thing at a time to complete tasks more quickly and efficiently.

It can also help to write a daily to-do list. This frees your brain up to focus on what needs to be done, letting you take action instead of constantly trying to remember everything that has been asked of you. Organize your list of to-dos, starting with the task that will have the biggest impact on your day. If you could do just one thing what would this be? Think about what absolutely needs to be accomplished and go from there.

Finally, consider the things that you can do at the same time or in the same way each day. The automation of your smaller, more repetitive tasks, such as checking email or reading reports, will help you conserve mental energy for the more important ones.

Overload can paralyze your brain, making it impossible for you to accomplish your crucial tasks. However, by effectively organizing your time, you can manage overload, making your professional life less stressful and more productive than ever.
